Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years. Also has been used by Mayan people, by their curanderos, in Centro America since thousands years ago.

Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

The principal aim of acupuncture is to treat the whole person, not only the symptoms, to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the person.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's primordial energy - known as Qi (pronounced chee). The circulation of Qi moves in a smooth and balanced way through different meridians (channels). Acupuncture is a therapy that places thin needles along specified points on the body in order to rebalance the body's energy flow resulting in a positive therapeutic effect.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Acupuncture works by balancing the flow of Qi within the body, thereby eliminating imbalances and blockages, and supplementing any deficiencies.

Acupuncture is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems. Acupuncture practitioners use sterilized, stainless-steel, disposable needles to balance the flow of Qi in the body, and to promote natural healing.

From a Western point of view different studies explain the effects of acupuncture as followed:

• Acupuncture improves circulation

• Acupuncture stimulates endorphin release, thereby reduces pain

• Acupuncture influences the release of neurotransmitters

• Acupuncture influences the ANS (autonomic nervous system)

• Acupuncture stimulates the electrical currents of the body

Within the last decades Acupuncture has become widely accepted in Western societies, receiving acknowledgement from the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective form of medical treatment for a vast number of conditions and diseases. WHO acknowledges that acupuncture has the following health benefits:

• Increases energy and vitality

• Reduces stress

• Improves digestive function

• Helps to feel relaxed and energized

• Enhances your immune system

• Lowers blood pressure

• Helps to control addictions-alcohol, drugs, smoking.
